1892, July 23rd | The birth of Tafari Makonnen in Ejarsa Goro, Harer province, Ethiopia. |
1895 | Italy invades Ethiopia |
1896, March 1st-2nd | Menelik II defeats the Italians at Adowa |
1905, November 1st | Tafari Makonnen is made Dejazmatch by his father Ras Makonnen |
1906 March 21st | Ras Makonnen, Tafari’s father, dies |
1910 March 3rd | Tafari is appointed governor of Harer province |
1911 July 31st | Tafari marries Menen Asfaw |
1913 December 12th | Menelik II dies |
1916 September | Empress Zauditu takes power and Tafari is named Ras and Regent |
1923 | Ras Tafari takes Ethiopia into the League of Nations |
1928 | Tafari becomes Negus (King) |
1930 November 2nd | Negus Tafari is crowned Emperor of Ethiopia and takes his baptismal name HAILE SELASSIE which means Power of the Trinity. His wife, Menen Asfaw is also crowned Empress in a break with trodition. |
1931 | Ethiopia’s first constitution promulgated |
1935 | Mussolini invades Ethiopia |
1936 | His Imperial Majesty goes into exile in England and buys Fairfield House near Bath. He makes His famous speech to the League of Nations |
January 1941 | HIM returns to Ethiopia and defeats the Italian forces with the aid of British troops |
May 5th 1941 | HIM enters Addis Abeba in triumph |
1951 | HIM builds new Cathedral of St. Mary of Zion to house the Ark of the Covenant |
1952 | Eritrea federated with Ethiopia by UN |
1955 | Revised constitution promulgated |
1961 | Empress Menen passes |
1962 | HIM abolishes the federation of Eritrea and Ethiopia |
1963 | The Organisation of African Unity (OAU) is established at Addis Abeba |
April 1966 | HIM visit to the Caribbean. Haile Selassie I reached Jamaica on the 21st April |
1973 | Famine in the northern provinces of Welo and Tigre leads to propaganda and civil unrest |
1974 | HIM deposed |
