Coretta Scott King
1927 - 2006

Coretta Scott King — to many, the first lady of the civil rights movement — died yesterday.

The wife of Martin Luther King, Jr., Ms. King dedicated her life's work to bringing about racial justice and nonviolent social change — both at her husband's side and following his death. In the public eye, Ms. King came to personify the values she and her husband espoused in their work: peace, fairness, equality, and freedom.

Ms. King's loss is particularly felt here at the American Anti-Slavery Group. We met in 2000, when she awarded our organization's president the Boston Freedom Award. It was a rare moment of personal triumph to have one of our role models tell us that she was "personally inspired" by our dedication to the fight to end chattel slavery.

In her words: Struggle is a never-ending process. Freedom is never really won — you earn it and win it in every generation."

May her commitment to serving others — even in the face of great obstacles — and her example continue to inspire you today and through Black History Month.

The need for 'Governmental Administration in the Rastafari movement'

Greetings Sister Mary Dread,

I trust all is going well with the I and the I family. I have now been working out of the AU 6th Region Secretariat for two strongs now and momentum is building. Baba Ras Marcus agreed to have his email (below) posted. Give thanks.

Most raspectfully,

Ras Nathaniel

Greetings Ras Nathaniel,

Hoping all is well with you and your family and your entire African Village. Thank you for this information and let me also hope, that the bridges of community unity, which you and others are trying to build, will become some of the bridges upon which African people everywhere will be able to walk to become participants in the United States of Africa and her people everywhere. The time is long over due, for practical Governmental Administration in the Rastafari movement, so that we can place ourselves in a positive position to serve African people everywhere. When we talk about Africa for Africans, those at home and those abroad, we must be talking and thinking about African people everywhere, instead of just Rastafari people only. We must do practical social and Governmental works, which becomes visible, to African people everywhere, and from which our people get benefits, so that they can respect us, for the services which we offer, and be attracted to us as their brothers and sisters, as a result of our good work and services.

I respect the fact, that there are many African liberation organizations, which are working together, in connection with the Africa Union, which also means in connection with Mama Africa. One thing which we must really learn, and learn seriously, is that ideas are the father and mother of all inventions, and of all manifestations, therefore, when we are working together as organizations, reasoning upon a subject can not be too much, we must listen well to each other, because out of reasoning comes forth ideas, and whether we wish to accept it or not, it is the best ideas, which sober people will follow, not the best speaker, or the more eloquent speaker, in the end it is the best ideas, which our people and organizations will uphold. We do need to keep our various organizations working together forever, therefore, we must be careful, that we allow the best ideas to lead, so that individuals, do not accuse each other of being dictators, and results in scattering instead of more gathering, we only have time today for Unity in our African family everywhere.

Workshops are very good educational activities, since they provide an atmosphere for dialogues and conscious reasoning, which results in the planting and cultivation of good ideas. It is also proper for presenters to get reasonable pay for their services, but there must be some kind of community accountabilities, in order to discourage assumptions, and gossip mongering. I will be following the activities of these events to the best of my ability, and I am hoping that it will have a very smooth runnings, so the other African liberation organizations, will find great pleasure to participate, so that the goals expected by the African Union, and we as Africans in the diaspora, will be fulfilled in 2007, when the day of the Joseph Project arrives. It is such a very good thing that Africa Union, came to the realization, that Africans in the Diaspora, are indeed Africans abroad, and therefore, are part of everything in Mama Africa, therefore we are entitled, to become the 6th region of the African Union, because we did leave our land and other properties in Mama Africa, we did not and could not take them across the middle passage.

I think what you are doing here is well structured Governmentally, and I do hope, that for this one time, we as African people, can put all our petty differences aside, and see in what way we can work together, to make some successful moves, for the upliftment of African people everywhere. If there are things which some of us do not understand about this project, then we must ask questions, instead of going around speaking without investigation. The time has really come for Rastafari people to be engaged in real governmental activities. It is my opinion, that when there are Iyabinghi Celebrations, the first part of the celebration, should really be governmental reasoning, reports about what is taking place in the community, should be discussed, and a collection taken in for governmental works, and then we can proceed to Iyasies. I know that many people do not share this view, but how else can we function, if we do not support our social and economic structures. How will we be able to feed the hungry, shelter the homeless, care for the infants, protect the elders and clothe the naked, we can only do these things by doing them.

Again I send many oceans of blessings and self-determination to African people everywhere.

ONE BLACK HEART ONE BLACK LOVE
Baba Ras Marcus.

Sudan Freedom Walk

Right now in Darfur 3.5 million people are starving, 2.5 million have fled their homes, and over 500,000 civilians have died in the last 2 years alone — the victims of genocide, disease, and state-produced famine. It's staggering.

This spring the American Anti-Slavery Group and The Sudan Campaign are joining forces to create an event that matches the magnitude of this tragedy in size and scope.

Sudan Freedom Walk

From the UN (NY) to the White House (DC)
March 15 — April 5

Former slave Simon DengAASG Associate and Sudanese refugee Simon Deng (at right) will lead the 300-mile march, which protests the U.S. government's failure thus far to adequately address the situation. With stops in 19 cities — including Philadelphia and Baltimore — the Walk has real potential to bring fresh and much-needed exposure to the crimes of genocide and slavery that have ravaged Darfur and the rest of Sudan. Read about the Walk's specific demands here.

The Walk will begin March 15 in front of UN headquarters in New York and finish in a rally in front of the White House in Washington, D.C. on April 5. Find out when the Walk will be passing through your neighborhood and mark your calendar!

The reason I'm writing you now is because you have a chance to play a key role in this historic event. The march will span 5 states, so good communication along the route is essential. Please let us know if you're interested in helping us coordinate press, publicity, or logistics. This is a volunteer-led initiative so any help is sincerely appreciated.

Finally, a word about the man behind the Walk. Simon Deng, who initiated the Sudan Freedom Walk, is a former slave who was captured during a government-sponsored raid on his village in southern Sudan. He explains: "My hope is that the Walk will present a united front among activists and Sudanese refugees and pressure the international community to work unequivocally to bring peace and justice to Sudan."

I hope you'll join him in this fight. It may be the most important walk you'll ever take.

In Solidarity,

Diane Nguyen

Let I&I pray for Mortimo Planno - email dated Thursday 19th January 2006

"Hail Beloved Empress Ijahnya,

On Tuesday at 11:58 I received a telephone call from the Dr. saying that Mortimo Planno had stopped breathing, they had been working on him since 9:00am and that he was dying. I immediately broke down while rushing to his bedside where he lay seemingly lifeless with tubes leading into his lungs to bring the exchange of gases which he had ceased to do for himself. Except for the twitching of his eyes from time to time for the next few hours we were being advised to make arrangements for there was nothing else that could be done and that his heart would stop beating at some point in time (soon was the suggestion).
The brethren and sistren started to gather and the Kez from the EOChurch came and prayed by his bedside. All seemed lost and many had thought it a final view of this great Rasta man's journey. It had even been rumoured that he had been pronounced dead and taken off the breathing machine and heart monitor. I left his side at 5:00pm expecting that we would hear news of his final beats at any time. When I returned to his quarters at West Rd. at 9:00pm the news was that he started to breathe again, had open his eyes and had began an uphill journey from that resting place that he had gone to. When I made my way to his bedside moments later he was shifting in his bed in response to voices but no sound came from him. The next morning, Wednesday, the said doctor called to tell me to come and look at my patient. When I visited he was talking and breathing without need for the machine.

Indeed his situation is critical but The Lion continues to fight for our survival.

One Perfect Rastafari Love

Bongo Niah"
