Princess Tenagne Worq Passes on

Princess Tenagne Worq, the first born and last surviving child of Emperor Haile-Selassie, passed forward on Sunday April 6th. She was 90 years old and the mother of seven children. The father of the first six, Ras Desta Damtew, was killed fighting the Italians. The princess spent 15 years imprisoned by dictator Mengistu Haile-Mariam following the overthrow of His Imperial Majesty. One of her sons, Rear Admiral Eskindir Desta was executed by the Dergue. She also outlived two more of her children, Amha Desta and Maryam Abebe, the daughter of Ato Abebe Reta, one of Haile Selassie's ambassadors and ministers. Thousands of Ethiopians attended the funeral on April 13th when she was laid to rest in the Imperial Crypt of the Holy Trinity Cathedral.

I-mail from Ras Nathaniel (give thanks to Ras Adam)

Ras Nathaniel in Shashamene writes: Friday, 11 April 2003, at 5:17 a.m.

"Greetings and Rastafari Blessings in the Most Precious Name of H.I.M. Haile Selassie Andenha and H.I.M. Woizero Giorgis Empress Menen

Yesterday, members of the Ethiopian Royal Family arrived at Bole International Airport to attend funeral services for Princess Tenagne-Work, 90 year-old, the eldest daughter of the Emperor and the mother of Rear Admiral Eskinder Desta, who was executed by the Derg late in 1974. The Princess was imprisoned for many years by the Derg. Princess Tenagne-Work was also the mother of four princesses and had many grandchildren. The date of her funeral ceremony is not yet set. Members of the Rastafari Royal family were also on the plane. No media was present at the airport, but Ras Xylon, in full Rastafari regalia, was allowed to briefly videotape the Royal Family's arrival."
