UNITED AID FOR PEOPLES OF AFRICAN DESCENT - COMING OF THE LATE DR. MALAKU
E. BAYEN VOE Volume 5 Number 25 July 19, 1941
"Upon the return of these two delegates who are among our leading citizens, the 'United Aid for Peoples of African Descent' was formed as the general organization to unify our efforts. The conference with the Emperor resulted in his agreeing with their request to send an Ethiopian to the United States of America to aid the organization in its work of unification, and to raise funds to aid Ethiopia. It was on the strength of the representation made to the Emperor by those delegates, that the late Dr. Malaku E. Bayen was sent as a representative. 'The United Aid For Peoples of African Descent, Inc' functioned perfectly for a while, but unfortunately, members of the Communist Party edged in, and were trying to make the 'United Aid' a Communist organization, and to divert its aims and objects to the cause of Communism. Faithful members led the fight against these agents of Communism, but they were so strongly entrenched in the 'United Aid' that another organization had to be set up and that organization was and is today THE ETHIOPIAN WORLD FEDERATION, INC. It is not just another organization. It is not merely an organization of clubs where people meet to socialize and have fun. It is not a place in which to seek individual advantage and personal advertisement." (cont. page 2 column 2) |

EWF UPDATE At the end of October, the EWF International President traveled to Chicago to discuss EWF Executive Council & constitutional matters with Executive Council Elected Member Ras Nathaniel. One of the issues at hand was the failure of some International Officers on the Executive Council and Local Officers on their Executive Committees, to fulfill their constitutionally mandated reporting responsibilities. For example, Article III Section 3(f) states that ". . . the International Organizer . . . shall submit a monthly report." Likewise, By-Laws Section 2 states "All locals must send monthly reports and returns to the Headquarters." After a detailed study of the EWF constitution, it was learned that the "paperwork" of the EWF consists of 28 "forms" such as applications, receipts, monthly and quarterly reports, vouchers, membership and sick lists, accounting books, complaint / grievance / impeachment forms, meeting minutes, dues cards, and charters. IT IS THROUGH THESE FORMS THAT THE BUSINESS OF THE EWF IS CONDUCTED, ACCOUNTED FOR, AND MADE KNOWN TO ITS OFFICERS AND MEMBERS. Without these forms, no business can be said to have been properly conducted, and the absence of these forms entails irresponsibility. The Executive Council now has available all forms of the organization and they will be sent to each local's Executive Secretary who shall make them available and inform the local's Executive Committee that AN AUDIT WILL BE MADE AND SUBMITTED AT THE 2005 CONVENTION MEASURING EACH OFFICERS' PERFORMANCE measured objectively by their compliance to administrative duties. |

| AGAINST GLOBAL
APARTHEID By Patrick Boyd
" 'South Africa is what she is today because, driven by the spirit of human and international solidarity, you, the peoples of the world took a stand and said that apartheid in South Africa will not pass.' With these words, president Thabo Mbeki welcomed dignitaries to the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD) in August 2002. He continued: 'We have converged at the Cradle of Humanity to confront the social behavior that has pity neither for beautiful nature nor for living human beings. This social behavior has produced and entrenches a global system of apartheid. The suffering of the billions who are the victims of this system calls for the same response that drew the peoples of the world into the struggle for the defeat of apartheid in this country.' The phenomenon of 'global apartheid' is defined by Washington-based Africa advocates Salih Booker and Bill Minter as 'an international system of minority rule whose attributes include differential access to basic human rights, wealth and power, is the outcome of political power associated with late 20th century economic crisis, and the ideology of 'neo-liberalism' . . . namely, to rely much more upon markets . . . . Because of economic and geopolitic control largely emanating from Washington, capitalism survives - even if Africans do not - by 'shifting and stalling' two core contradictions of capitalism: 'over accumulation crisis' and 'uneven development.' This jargon means that too much has been produced and its distribution is too unequal . . . ." One necessary task is to discipline financial power with more serious intent, which probably entails combining the 'deglobalisation' of capital with the 'decommodification' of many aspects of life that are now being colonised by business. Samir Amin, Africa's leading political economist, describes this process as theft: 'The US programme is certainly imperialist in the most brutal sense of that word, but it is not 'imperial' in the sense . . . . that it does not aim to manage the societies of the planet in order to better integrate them into a coherent capitalist system. Instead, it aims only at looting their resources." |
cont from page one. "It is not for the worship of any individual, whether that individual be king or commoner. Anyone who would seek these things in the Ethiopian World Federation, has not caught the spirit of the times and the new outlook of true and sincere Black men and women everywhere. We need to make doubly sure that we do not allow ourselves to be led by selfishness and ignorance into utter darkness. AIMS OF THE FEDERATION We may sum up the aims and objects of the Ethiopian World Federation into one sentence: IT IS AN ORGANIZATION CREATED TO PROMOTE AND SECURE FOR BLACK PEOPLES EVERYWHERE THE DIVINE RIGHTS OF POLITICAL, ECONOMIC, RELIGIOUS AND SOCIAL FREEDOM TO WHICH THEY ARE ENTITLED, but which have been consistently denied them in nearly all parts of the world. Any action or activity which tends to impede progress along these lines, is contrary to, and subversive of the best interests of the Federation."

VOE Prophets Speak Haile Selassie I Speaks on the Voice of Ethiopia and the Ethiopian World Federation, Inc. "We congratulate the Voice of Ethiopia on its Second Anniversary.
We sincerely hope that it will continue to keep the just case of Ethiopia
before the American public." Telegram received at 40 Broad Street, New York, from Bath 34 26, England, and read at the Ethiopian World Federation Auditorium on Saturday, January 28, 1939. "Conquering Lion of the Tribe of Judah, Haile Selassie I, Elect of God, Emperor of Ethiopia Members of the Ethiopian World Federation, Salutations! This letter expresses the token of my warmest appreciation for the aid and sympathy evinced by you and your fellows in the hour of Ethiopia's crisis. During those eventful years and since, I have never ceased to think of these benevolences nor of the spirit which impelled you to act in so charitable a manner to my beloved country and her righteous cause. These are the years of strenuous efforts to bridge the gulf between the years of war, occupation and the interruption of, the normal life of Ethiopia. It is my sincerest wish, however, that through our mutual efforts, the future will prove beneficial to the relations between you and the people of this land." |
