The Reparations Movement in the United States

There has been many articles in the news recently about the reparations movement in the States and the Disclosure Laws which force companies to disclose any links they may have had to slavery in the past. This has caused much debate as ones could imagine. The most recent story I have read and one that I have just posted a link to states

"We’re placing reparations in a much broader context," Mawuli Mel Davis, a defense attorney from Atlanta, told BlackAmericaWeb.com  in a recent interview. "We see reparations as a way to impact the future of our children."

"Some see reparations as being about the past," said Davis, who is also a coordinator of the reparations movement. "But although it’s grounded in the past, it really speaks to contemporary issues that directly plague our communities."

As a visitor to the States I agree. I have visited/driven through both the richest areas and the poorest areas of New York, New Jersey and Washington. One thing struck me forcibly and that is although you might see black people in the richest areas, you hardly ever see white people in the poorest areas. Washington especially struck me as a city in two halves. We stayed on the outskirts of the town where it was rundown, motel land. The centre of town is clean, rich and very nice. The outskirts are dirty, poor and horrible and mostly inhabited by black people.

If the big companies in America really want to make reparations to black people I think they should spend some money doing up the ghettos. Resurfacing the roads. Building better schools and universities. Building better facilities eg youth clubs, adult education colleges, hospitals, health centres and better homes. Maybe this would help black people especially the youths to take pride in their neighbourhoods. Better education would lead to better jobs and the ability to climb out of poverty. Scholarships to help black youths get a college education. Jobs which those companies could also provide. Accommodation and/or transport to get to those jobs. Also of course funds for repatriation for those who wish to forward to Africa.

I could go on and as I don't live in the States I might not have the complete picture but from the little I've seen (and this is supposed to be the more enlightened North) there is too much segregation. Black areas, Chinese areas, White areas etc etc etc. What's all that about? In all my visits I don't think I've seen a Native American??? Although I've seen their crafts on sale in many places. They need reparations too. Most of their land was stolen and many of their people slaughtered.

Maybe I shouldn't criticize as it is not my country and the UK is hardly perfect, this country owes the rest of the world big time .... still just some thoughts.

Comment on "Excerpts from soon to be published book"

Comment on Ras Jahaziel's article and Ras Nathaniel's reply

Firstly I would like to give thanks to Ras Jahaziel for forwarding his words to be published here at Rasta Ites. Secondly to state my views on the reasoning that is developing.
Ras Jahaziel is saying that the words “There will always be rich and poor because there are those who do not like to work” are not really the words of His Majesty and that they have been added to His Majesty's words by Babylon.
Ras Nathaniel is saying that these are His Majesty's words and that they are true. I tend to agree with Ras Nathaniel. There is no reason to believe that anything has been slipped into HIM speech. The words are true. I&I all have our works to do and if I&I do not do these works we become poor in Irits. Also the Rastafari nation becomes poor in Irits. The work he is talking about is not the kind of work we get up and go to everyday but the works of the Almighty. I&I all have our works; I have this website and, even through my day job, I have had the opportunity to forward the works, through display and events, reasoning with the people I meet in my work etc.  Ras Nathaniel has his writings and organising in the States and the works he has done in Africa also. Ras Jahaziel has his painting, his writing and his videos etc. Plus I am sure both bredrens do many more works that I&I don't know about.
Without I&I works I&I would be much poorer Iritically.

Bob Marley's remains to be taken to Ethiopia

In a move that is likely to cause much reasoning amongst I&I, Bob Marley's wife Rita is to carry Bob Marley's bones forward to be laid to rest in Shashamane, Ethiopia some time after or during the celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of his birth.
(see news story here / Rita's denial see the latest on this story).

Thousands of people attended Bob's funeral in Jamaica in 1981. Still attending any kind of funeral is contrary to Ras Tafari custom as Iyesu said "Let the dead bury their dead"
and as Bunny Wailer reminds us

"Let the dead bury their dead
and who is to be fed, be fed
I ain't got no time to waste on you
I'm a livin man and I got work to do"

Still however one sees that, the remains of those who pass forward have to be buried or otherwise disposed of and there is no escaping that. I know many idrens who have had to deal with the passing forward of a loved one. Still I have never heard of anyone having two funerals!!! Many might say that the bredren should be allowed to rest in peace.

On the other hand there is a precedent for Rita's actions in Jah Bible. When the children of Israel moved forward out of Egypt they carried with them the bones of Joseph, as recorded in Exodus 13:19

"And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him: for he had straitly sworn the children of Israel, saying, God will surely visit you; and ye shall carry up my bones away hence with you."

Bob Marley was a member of the Twelve Tribes of Israel and was of the Tribe of Joseph. Judy Mowatt's song "Joseph" was a tribute to Bob. Maybe it is time to carry his bones out of Egypt and maybe I&I the children of His Imperial Majesty Haile Selassie the first should soon follow.

YOUTH CORNER

Greetings in the glorious name of H.I.M. Haile Selassie I & H.I.M. Empress Menen

Last year in May I added a Youth Corner to Rasta Ites following expressions of concern by sistrens over the education of the Youths of Ras Tafari. The idea was that ones would contribute, articles, pictures, stories, history ......... anything on a level to teach the youths. Also it was for youths to contribute their work.

I also started a forum for the Youths at the same time. After some initial interest this forum was not being used and so I deleted it.

Up until now I have had no input from anyone that can be added to the Youth Corner. Certain ones have made suggestions as to the type of material that should be on there and certain ones promised to send items, still no-one has contributed. Personally I do not have the time to do this I-self. Most of my spare time is already taken up with the main website. Do not get I wrong, I am not complaining. I give thanks Itinually that the Almighty have given I this works to do.

I have had a few events sent that have been added to the family events page, still not really enough to encourage ones to visit regularly. I have not been sent any details of supplementary schools except the ones I already had on the site. The links page I have compiled I-self, no-one has sent any links!!!

So following on from this, with regret, I have to say that I will give the corner another two months until the end of May and if there is still no input then it will be removed from the site. I will keep the links page still as I feel this could be useful to ones with children. I know I use it when the grandchildren visit!!!

Tony Blair's Commission for Africa

I don't need a commission to tell Tony Blair that there are two things that are essential to improve African peoples lives

  1. Cancel the debts that African countries "owe" to the rest of the world.

  2.  Repay the debts that the rest of the world owes to Africa for over 400 years of slavery, colonization, persecution, kidnap, murder, rape, theft, looting, pillaging etc etc etc
