Princess Tenagne Worq passes on

Princess Tenagne Worq, the first born and last surviving child of Emperor Haile-Selassie, passed forward on Sunday April 6th. She was 90 years old and the mother of seven children.

The father of the first six, Ras Desta Damtew, was killed fighting the Italians. The princess spent 15 years imprisoned by dictator Mengistu Haile-Mariam following the overthrow of His Imperial Majesty. One of her sons, Rear Admiral Eskindir Desta was executed by the Dergue.

She also outlived two more of her children, Amha Desta and Maryam Abebe, the daughter of Ato Abebe Reta, one of Haile Selassie’s ambassadors and ministers.

Thousands of Ethiopians attended the funeral on April 13th when she was laid to rest in the Imperial Crypt of the Holy Trinity Cathedral.
