On Wednesday 14 February, Dub Me Always presents a Valentine’s special when veteran female DJ duo Nzinga Soundz join host David Katz for a night of vintage roots reggae, soul and lover’s rock, original vinyl style.

During the 1980s, DJ Ade & Junie Rankin’ regularly ran things at venues such as the Four Aces, the Astoria, the Africa Centre and the Mambo Inn, supporting Burning Spear and the Mighty Diamonds among many others, with guest interviewees Augustus Pablo, Betty Wright and Ziggy Marley appearing on their weekly radio show on community station SLR. The name of their sound was adapted from that of a 17th Century Angolan warrior queen, in keeping with the duo’s progressive outlook. With niceness is guaranteed on the dancefloor, this historic occasion is not to be missed!

One Love Books presents "Covers: Retracing Reggae Record Sleeves in London" by Alex Bartsch

Covers is a project by Alex Bartsch documenting reggae record covers that were photographed in London between 1967 and 1988. After years of research, and working in collaboration with Al ‘Fingers’ Newman, Bartsch has identified and photographed 50 London-based reggae sleeves in their original locations, holding them up at arm’s-length to blend in with their surroundings, decades later. Presented in this way, the covers document the passing of time and provide a fascinating insight into the history of reggae music in the UK, an often overlooked but immensely important part of Britain’s musical identity and popular culture.

To give further context to the photographs, excerpts from interviews with those involved in the making of the records – be it the original singer, producer, photographer, designer or record label employee – are included as part of the display.

    Exhibition/book launch: 6–8pm, Wednesday 4 April

On Wednesday 9 May, at 8pm sharp, Dub Me Always presents the book launch for Alex Bartsch’s Covers: Retracing Reggae Record Sleeves in London, published by One Love Books, with the author, publisher Al Fingers and contributors Noel Hawks and Chris Lane of Fashion Records. Then, to the midnight hour, a night of original reggae vinyl with Fingers, Hawks and Lane on the decks, alongside host DJ David Katz.

    https://www.facebook.com/events/2114959965450520/

Chris Lane began writing on reggae in Blues & Soul in 1973, making his first trip to Jamaica that same year, spending his eighteenth birthday at the newly built Black Ark studio co-writing a song with Lee ’Scratch’ Perry and Bob Marley, as well as conducting trail-blazing interviews with Big Youth, Augustus Pablo, Keith Hudson, Dennis Brown, Bunny Lee and Coxsone Dodd. He contributed to Melody Maker, NME, Let It Rock, Music Week and Black Music, and in 1976 co-founded Dub Vendor with John MacGillivray. By 1978 he was involved in record production, most notably for photographer Dave Hendley’s Cruise label, and in 1980 Lane and MacGillivray launched Fashion Records. Known as the Dub Organizer because of the dub plates he cut at King Tubby’s studio and the Black Ark in the 70s, Chris is a renowned selector too.

Noel Hawks began working for Dub Vendor in 1979 and was naturally involved in Fashion Records too. In fact, he took the photographs for some of Fashion’s biggest picture sleeves, as noted in the Covers book. The author of Bunny Lee’s official biography and the book Complete Lyrics Of Bob Marley : Songs Of Freedom, as the scribe behind countless liner notes, Noel is also a keen selector.

Expect rare tunes galore and appealing floor-fillers, delivered with equal passion.
