CHAMPIONZ LEAGUE SELECTORS AND ACTIVISTS Today reggae and sound system culture has a highly visible profile, thanks to Jah Shaka, Aba Shanti, Channel One and, of course, Bob Marley. But much of the groundwork for reggae music in the United Kingdom was laid by members of the CHAMPIONZ LEAGUE SELECTORS AND ACTIVISTS The Championz League selectors, are FESTUS, [COSXONE SOUND SYSTEM], RIBS UNITY [FATMAN, UNITY SOUND SYSTEM], NATTY FRONTLINE [JAH SUFFERER/COSXONE/FRONTLINE SOUND] and DENNIS BOVELL [JAH SUFFERER]. They are joined by THE ACTIVISTS: ORIGINAL DUBMAN, HB NAPTALI, RAS DIGBY, UNCLE AL, PRINCE SHERMAN and special guests. In the musical hotbed of the 1970s and 1980s sound system scene, these were the champion selectors to beat. They were the ones tasked by Jamaican producers to break their biggest tunes in the UK. They were also responsible for bringing new artists to the public. An example is the number one single IRIE FEELINGS by RUPIE EDWARDS launched by DENNIS BOVELL in a clash with FATMAN. Likewise NATTY, who alongside JAH PEBBLES road-tested Bob Marley’s EXODUS on a special dubplate months before its ISLAND Records release. As the selector for Coxsone Sound, with an encyclopaedic archive of vinyl knowledge, FESTUS spent many years fending off all challenges. RIBS was also untouchable, especially when he introduced the unique CHANNEL ONE mixing style - radically altering roots and dub reggae in ways that can still be heard today.Completing this lineup of champion selectors are the ACTIVISTS. These include toasters or emcees such as HB NAPTALI, RAS DIGBY and ORIGINAL DUBMAN as well as other selectors who earned respect in clashes with the group. The Champions League are quite simply the toughest squad of sound system legends ever assembled under one banner. Drawing on decades of musical and cultural experience they bring a depth and excitement to any reggae event - from the liveliest clash to the most uplifting spiritual cleansing roots rock reggae session. ONE HEART & ONE LOVE FROM THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TO THE WORLD AFRICAN HEAD CHARGE SOUND SYSTEM To celebrate their forthcoming On-U Sound releases via Warp, the African Head Charge collective is taking to the road as a Sound System. African Head Charge are true pioneers who have pushed the boundaries of sound since 1981. Originally devised as a studio project, the London-based collective has achieved legendary cult status. They’ve created over 13 albums and graced stages across the world: from Australia and New Zealand to Glastonbury. Vibes n Pressure is a movement, a record label, a philosophy. For the past 10 years, we have created some of the most memorable events in London, from open mic nights for emerging talent, to much bigger one-day festival themed concerts, events promoting critical thinking of overarching themes, and our flagship event … The Shubeen, which is rooted in a warm and welcoming vibe, with upfront rootical music, Ital food, and great live performances. We pride ourselves on a history of audiences leaving our events both uplifted and inspired. A few of the acts to have blessed our stages include Wretch32, Kwabs, The Skints, George The Poet, Dawn Penn, Tom Grennan, Junior Marvin, Akala, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, a young Ed Sheeran to name but a few. Some of our highlights in the past have included hosting and curating festival stages at Glastonbury, Bestival, Victorious Festival and others, hosting the UK leg of the Rototom European Reggae talent search, creating the Youth-Hub events which hosted live debates on themes such as consumption, revolution, the black UK experience and other big concepts, with film and live performances. We have released singles, albums and compilations on our record label and along the way created internships for young people to learn about the record industry, and gain experience in events management. Come to the Jago on the 13th September and be apart of the movement. The first event will include performances from foundation Vibes and Pressure family members… Natty and The Rebelship headlining, supported by the amazing JJ Soulx and Hip Hop wizards RU1FAM.
