The night will start at 7pm with a free screening of I Am The Gorgon: Bunny “Striker” Lee and the Roots of Reggae, with Bunny Lee in attendance. https://www.facebook.com/events/114699912530358/ Lloydie Coxsone is one of the giants of sound system culture in Britain. Born and raised in the rebel parish of St Thomas, Jamaica, Lloydie moved to London in 1962 and settled in Balham, where he began playing on a sound system called Queen of the West. After moving to the Barry Skyrocket sound, he and selector Festus formed a sound called Lloyd the Matador, which did not last long. Then, after a brief stint playing a sound called Duke Reid, Lloydie and Festus formed Sir Coxsone Outernational from their base in Clapham; the sound later shifted to Brixton. Residencies at West End clubs such as the Grotto on Wardour Street and the Roaring 20s on Carnaby Street helped reggae to gain acceptance amongst the wider population, Sir Coxsone keeping the edge through a perpetual stash of exclusive dub plates from Jamaican stalwarts such as King Tubby, Prince Jammy, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Burning Spear, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Max Romeo, Yabby You, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Bob Andy, Alton Ellis, the Royals, Scientist, Zap Pow and countless others. I Roy was a resident toaster on the sound during the early 1970s, and from 1971, Lloydie Coxsone was venturing into record production, reaching his stride in the mid-1970s when his production of Louisa Mark’s “Caught You In A Lie” kick-started the lover’s rock craze. The two volumes of his King Of The Dub Rock albums are classics of the dub LP genre, and his productions of Creation Steppers and other acts are highly sought-after gems of the roots reggae era. Levi Roots, Blacka Dread, Tena Fly and Mackie Banton are among the many talented vocalists and toasters to be associated with the sound, which was one of the first to tour widely in Britain, as well as on the European continent. Lloydie Coxsone is rightly revered as a legendary figure on the sound system circuit, and we are particularly pleased to welcome him to Dub Me Always for the very first time. Guest selector Grace of Spades from New York presents the Watch This Sound vinyl reggae show on BBox Radio. She will be joining host DJ David Katz on the decks in the early part of the night. We expect a total roadblock, so come early to avoid disappointment! At 7pm sharp, there will be a free screening of I Am The Gorgon: Bunny “Striker” Lee and the Roots of Reggae. If you haven’t seen the film before, come down early to catch it! And if you’ve already seen it but have the time, come along to see it again with Bunny Lee on hand to answer questions and to sign albums, books and DVDs. https://www.facebook.com/Sir-Coxsone-Outernational-Sound-System-1458794637764061/ Doors open 6:30pm Sound system culture in the UK has played a vital part in UK music history. After years of research, and working in collaboration with Al ‘Fingers’ Newman, Bartsch has identified and photographed 50 London-based reggae sleeves in their original locations, holding them up at arm’s-length to blend in with their surroundings, decades later. Presented in this way, the covers document the passing of time and provide a fascinating insight into the history of reggae music in the UK, an often overlooked but immensely important part of Britain’s musical identity and popular culture. To give further context to the photographs, excerpts from interviews with those involved in the making of the records – be it the original singer, producer, photographer, designer or record label employee – are included as part of the display. Exhibition/book launch: 6–8pm, Wednesday 4 April On Wednesday 11 April, Dub Me Always presents another sound system special, when guest selectors Indian Ocean Sound w/DJ Lee and CB the Riddim Man join host DJ David Katz for a night of reggae, rock steady, deep roots and foundation dancehall, original vinyl style. As with this crew’s regular Reggae Time sessions, pure niceness is guaranteed! On Thursday, 19 April, Dub Me Always presents a record release party featuring reggae band The Majestic, with support from host DJ David Katz. https://www.facebook.com/events/206179213465305/ Roots rock reggae band The Majestic was formed by lead vocalist Faada Ras in the early 1980s, supporting Misty in Roots, Aswad and the Mighty Diamonds and opening for Hawkwind at Stonehenge. Then, in 2010, after a chance meeting between Faada and legendary guitarist Jimmy Page, the band was revived. The current line-up features vocalist Baba Ras, longstanding bassist Tony Alli, drummer Sam Ferrara, guitarist Eddie Mulvey and rhythm guitarist Gabriel Swinton Stott of Pillars of Dub. CHAMPIONZ LEAGUE SELECTORS AND ACTIVISTS Today reggae and sound system culture has a highly visible profile, thanks to Jah Shaka, Aba Shanti, Channel One and, of course, Bob Marley. But much of the groundwork for reggae music in the United Kingdom was laid by members of the CHAMPIONZ LEAGUE SELECTORS AND ACTIVISTS The Championz League selectors, are FESTUS, [COSXONE SOUND SYSTEM], RIBS UNITY [FATMAN, UNITY SOUND SYSTEM], NATTY FRONTLINE [JAH SUFFERER/COSXONE/FRONTLINE SOUND] and DENNIS BOVELL [JAH SUFFERER]. They are joined by THE ACTIVISTS: ORIGINAL DUBMAN, HB NAPTALI, RAS DIGBY, UNCLE AL, PRINCE SHERMAN and special guests. In the musical hotbed of the 1970s and 1980s sound system scene, these were the champion selectors to beat. They were the ones tasked by Jamaican producers to break their biggest tunes in the UK. They were also responsible for bringing new artists to the public. An example is the number one single IRIE FEELINGS by RUPIE EDWARDS launched by DENNIS BOVELL in a clash with FATMAN. Likewise NATTY, who alongside JAH PEBBLES road-tested Bob Marley’s EXODUS on a special dubplate months before its ISLAND Records release. As the selector for Coxsone Sound, with an encyclopaedic archive of vinyl knowledge, FESTUS spent many years fending off all challenges. RIBS was also untouchable, especially when he introduced the unique CHANNEL ONE mixing style - radically altering roots and dub reggae in ways that can still be heard today.Completing this lineup of champion selectors are the ACTIVISTS. These include toasters or emcees such as HB NAPTALI, RAS DIGBY and ORIGINAL DUBMAN as well as other selectors who earned respect in clashes with the group. The Champions League are quite simply the toughest squad of sound system legends ever assembled under one banner. Drawing on decades of musical and cultural experience they bring a depth and excitement to any reggae event - from the liveliest clash to the most uplifting spiritual cleansing roots rock reggae session. ONE HEART & ONE LOVE FROM THE CHAMPIONS LEAGUE TO THE WORLD AFRICAN HEAD CHARGE SOUND SYSTEM To celebrate their forthcoming On-U Sound releases via Warp, the African Head Charge collective is taking to the road as a Sound System. African Head Charge are true pioneers who have pushed the boundaries of sound since 1981. Originally devised as a studio project, the London-based collective has achieved legendary cult status. They’ve created over 13 albums and graced stages across the world: from Australia and New Zealand to Glastonbury. Their revolutionary combination of primal rhythms, tribal chants, heavy psychedelic dub, punk, roots reggae and 21st century electronica, generates an intoxicating soundscape of reggae-inflected drumming, visceral vocals and throbbing, bottomless bass-lines that touch the very heart of your being. Voted one of the best nights out in London, our flagship event has returned to Dalston, every second Friday night at the Jago (formerly passing clouds), commencing 13th September 2019. Vibes n Pressure is a movement, a record label, a philosophy. For the past 10 years, we have created some of the most memorable events in London, from open mic nights for emerging talent, to much bigger one-day festival themed concerts, events promoting critical thinking of overarching themes, and our flagship event … The Shubeen, which is rooted in a warm and welcoming vibe, with upfront rootical music, Ital food, and great live performances. We pride ourselves on a history of audiences leaving our events both uplifted and inspired. A few of the acts to have blessed our stages include Wretch32, Kwabs, The Skints, George The Poet, Dawn Penn, Tom Grennan, Junior Marvin, Akala, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, a young Ed Sheeran to name but a few. Some of our highlights in the past have included hosting and curating festival stages at Glastonbury, Bestival, Victorious Festival and others, hosting the UK leg of the Rototom European Reggae talent search, creating the Youth-Hub events which hosted live debates on themes such as consumption, revolution, the black UK experience and other big concepts, with film and live performances. We have released singles, albums and compilations on our record label and along the way created internships for young people to learn about the record industry, and gain experience in events management. Come to the Jago on the 13th September and be apart of the movement. The first event will include performances from foundation Vibes and Pressure family members… Natty and The Rebelship headlining, supported by the amazing JJ Soulx and Hip Hop wizards RU1FAM. For those that don't know my situation, over the last 10 years I have been fighting for my right to remain in this country: a place I recognise as my home.
Following the UK Brexit referendum in summer 2016, I was informed by the UK Home Office that my application to be here, was refused, for a second time. I am now awaiting my last chance, to plead my case in front of a judge, before probable forced deportation.
Back in 2011, a music benefit gig was held, and to those involved, I can not thank you all enough for this. The contributions from supporters went to secure a legal team, to deal with my 'right to stay'. This is the only reason why I am still here today.
Now here we are in 2017 and there is limited time left. before it is too late.
This is why I look to you for support, again, at my darkest hour. But I ask for Empowerment, not Pity.
On Sat. 20th of May 2017 at the FOX AND FIRKIN, Lewisham, there will be a benefit gig to raise support and awareness to my situation. All proceeds and donations will fund my legal case against deportation.
