"Session #5 @ Shoreditch- a monthly night showcasing roots reggae selectors powered by Westway Roots and New Era Reggae Soundsystems. Each session features a different guest selector on each sound as well as the residents playing revival/ roots, rocksteady, dancehall, steppas in a friendly fashion. 2 scoop stack each....

After Ramon Judah brought the vibes for the September session, we are pleased to have Diverse Collective come and play some records with New Era Reggae Sound System. Diverse Collective will see selector Charly Bendjy (former member Dub-ital, Italy) and the return of MC Singer Ramon Judah (Ramon Deen) to Shoreditch. Charly Bendje is an experienced selector who has performed with Mad Professor and Lee Scratch Perry. MC/singer Ramon Judah is a former member of Reggae Roast and has recently been providing fyah on the mic at Channel One dances. The man needs no further introduction.

Westway Roots Sound System will be joined by the Roots & Culture Warrior Ras Terry Gad ( member of Channel One Soundsystem/ Jah Trinity Soundsystem). Ras Terry founded Jah Trinity Sound way back in 1981 with brother Milton Westcarr. The sound was first called Lord Demonstrator and from 1981 - 1985 they played all kinds of roots music, rockers, rub-a-dub & soul to please the people. In 1986 they changed the name of the sound to Jah Trinity Outernational playing only strictly roots and culture. Since then Jah Trinity had played with other sound systems in the roots & culture scene such as Jah Shaka, Jah Tubby, Iration Steppers, Aba Shanti I, Jah Observer amongst a few. Ras Terry Gad was the dub selector and Milton Naphtali was the engineer and operator. Ras Terry Gad has since been a part of Channel One Soundsystem and has selected across Europe and the UK in his own right. The session is the day after Ras Terry’s birthday. Come and join the celebrations.

Hello folks. For those that don't know my name, it is Clarence Bradshaw, and my AKA MC Ishu.

I am a musician and I have been living and performing in London since 1989.
For those that don't know my situation, over the last 10 years I have been fighting for my right to remain in this country: a place I recognise as my home.
Following the UK Brexit referendum in summer 2016, I was informed by the UK Home Office that my application to be here, was refused, for a second time. I am now awaiting my last chance, to plead my case in front of a judge, before probable forced deportation.
Back in 2011, a music benefit gig was held, and to those involved, I can not thank you all enough for this. The contributions from supporters went to secure a legal team, to deal with my 'right to stay'. This is the only reason why I am still here today.
Now here we are in 2017 and there is limited time left. before it is too late.
This is why I look to you for support, again, at my darkest hour. But I ask for Empowerment, not Pity.
On Sat. 20th of May 2017 at the FOX AND FIRKIN, Lewisham, there will be a benefit gig to raise support and awareness to my situation. All proceeds and donations will fund my legal case against deportation.

An all dayer and all nighter at the amazing Fox & Firkin venue in Lewisham. One of London's most amazing pub music venues which boasts a huge beer garden. Some of the UK's most established Reggae DJs will be playing in the garden during the afternoon and evening.

Inside the pub we have a selection of top DJs and live acts, spanning Jungle, Drum'n'Bass, Reggae, Dub and Hip Hop.

Even if you don't know Ishu, you should come and check out this quality London Underground event and support a good cause.

Tickets are £7 on the door plus booking fee

Dub Me Always is proud to present another sound system special with the return of the mighty Jah Observer, alongside host DJ David Katz. Austin ‘Spiderman’ Palmer’s stack of exclusive dub plates (from Lee Perry, King Tubby, Mikey Dread and others) and stylistic specialism on the decks made Jah Observer one of the premier London sound systems during the 70s and 80s, and his regular presence at the Notting Hill Carnival was always greatly anticipated. Currently based in Jamaica, we are extremely fortunate to have Austin grace us with his presence. Which original 70s dub plates will Austin pull out of the bag? There’s only one way to find out! 8pm-midnight, free entry.

The mighty mighty HARUYASU "BigH" KUDOH will be with us for a very special one time session on Friday 21st July.

BigH is coming down all the way from Tokyo Japan to complete an album project with dubmaster Denis Bovell and Japanese singer Sandii.

We are super honoured and excited to have managed to get him down at The Stags Head - Expect a very deep selection from a man who has been active on the Tokyo Reggae scene for over 40 years!

BigH aka Haruyasu Kudoh has also been running the iconic "Open" Reggae club down in the Shinjuku district of Tokyo for 20 years. The place is no other than a basement bar loaded with a massive full stack Jamaican style sound system. A place you must visit once in your life, trully incredible : ))

"On Wednesday 13 September, Dub Me Always is pleased to present a night of original reggae vinyl, when Rav Hi-Fi meets Steady C, the rock steady specialist. Expect ska, rock steady and deep roots reggae, presented with style.

Repeat offenders Rav Hi-Fi features ace selectors Mikey of Two Bass Hit and Kingsley of the Prophecy Band on the decks. Rav Hi-Fi has made regular appearances at noted reggae revival nights such as Soft Wax at the Deptford Dub Club and Reggae Roast at different locations. In addition to their talents on the wheels of steel, Mikey has assisted reggae artists with music law, and Kingsley was a member of the Prophecy Band, which backed Barrington Levy, Nicodeemus, Jah Thomas and many other Jamaican acts during the early 1980s. On the night, they will be joined by guest selector Steady C, who takes particular delight in spinning rock steady.

Come on down and put on your dancing shoes for a night of original ska, rock steady and reggae vinyl gems.

On Wednesday 11 October, Dub Me Always presents another sound system special, when the legendary Lloydie Coxsone and guest selector Grace of Spades join host DJ David Katz for a night of original vintage roots reggae and unheard dubplates. The night will start at 7pm with a free screening of I Am The Gorgon: Bunny “Striker” Lee and the Roots of Reggae, with Bunny Lee in attendance.

    https://www.facebook.com/events/114699912530358/

Lloydie Coxsone is one of the giants of sound system culture in Britain. Born and raised in the rebel parish of St Thomas, Jamaica, Lloydie moved to London in 1962 and settled in Balham, where he began playing on a sound system called Queen of the West. After moving to the Barry Skyrocket sound, he and selector Festus formed a sound called Lloyd the Matador, which did not last long. Then, after a brief stint playing a sound called Duke Reid, Lloydie and Festus formed Sir Coxsone Outernational from their base in Clapham; the sound later shifted to Brixton. Residencies at West End clubs such as the Grotto on Wardour Street and the Roaring 20s on Carnaby Street helped reggae to gain acceptance amongst the wider population, Sir Coxsone keeping the edge through a perpetual stash of exclusive dub plates from Jamaican stalwarts such as King Tubby, Prince Jammy, Lee ‘Scratch’ Perry, Burning Spear, Bob Marley and the Wailers, Max Romeo, Yabby You, Dennis Brown, Gregory Isaacs, Bob Andy, Alton Ellis, the Royals, Scientist, Zap Pow and countless others. I Roy was a resident toaster on the sound during the early 1970s, and from 1971, Lloydie Coxsone was venturing into record production, reaching his stride in the mid-1970s when his production of Louisa Mark’s “Caught You In A Lie” kick-started the lover’s rock craze. The two volumes of his King Of The Dub Rock albums are classics of the dub LP genre, and his productions of Creation Steppers and other acts are highly sought-after gems of the roots reggae era. Levi Roots, Blacka Dread, Tena Fly and Mackie Banton are among the many talented vocalists and toasters to be associated with the sound, which was one of the first to tour widely in Britain, as well as on the European continent. Lloydie Coxsone is rightly revered as a legendary figure on the sound system circuit, and we are particularly pleased to welcome him to Dub Me Always for the very first time.

Guest selector Grace of Spades from New York presents the Watch This Sound vinyl reggae show on BBox Radio. She will be joining host DJ David Katz on the decks in the early part of the night. We expect a total roadblock, so come early to avoid disappointment!

At 7pm sharp, there will be a free screening of I Am The Gorgon: Bunny “Striker” Lee and the Roots of Reggae. If you haven’t seen the film before, come down early to catch it! And if you’ve already seen it but have the time, come along to see it again with Bunny Lee on hand to answer questions and to sign albums, books and DVDs.

Sound system culture in the UK has played a vital part in UK music history. Since 1954 when Duke Vincent Forbes set up his home made system and started playing Ska and Calypso numbers at chest shaking volume, British sound system music has remained at the forefront of mainstream music culture.

This one-day celebration in the heart of Hackney will showcase the evolution of Caribbean sound systems culture into mainstream culture, showcasing music, film, photography and discussion.

    ·      Panel discussion and Q&A: Exploring the journey of sound system culture and its impact.

    ·      Sound System set up: A visual interactive experience of a sound system being set up.

    ·      Music: DJ sets taking you though a journey of sound system music and the sub genres it has influenced – Dub through to Grime.

    ·      Film – Guerrilla film screening of the Black British cult classic movie, Babylon.

On Wednesday 14 February, Dub Me Always presents a Valentine’s special when veteran female DJ duo Nzinga Soundz join host David Katz for a night of vintage roots reggae, soul and lover’s rock, original vinyl style.

During the 1980s, DJ Ade & Junie Rankin’ regularly ran things at venues such as the Four Aces, the Astoria, the Africa Centre and the Mambo Inn, supporting Burning Spear and the Mighty Diamonds among many others, with guest interviewees Augustus Pablo, Betty Wright and Ziggy Marley appearing on their weekly radio show on community station SLR. The name of their sound was adapted from that of a 17th Century Angolan warrior queen, in keeping with the duo’s progressive outlook. With niceness is guaranteed on the dancefloor, this historic occasion is not to be missed!

One Love Books presents "Covers: Retracing Reggae Record Sleeves in London" by Alex Bartsch

Covers is a project by Alex Bartsch documenting reggae record covers that were photographed in London between 1967 and 1988. After years of research, and working in collaboration with Al ‘Fingers’ Newman, Bartsch has identified and photographed 50 London-based reggae sleeves in their original locations, holding them up at arm’s-length to blend in with their surroundings, decades later. Presented in this way, the covers document the passing of time and provide a fascinating insight into the history of reggae music in the UK, an often overlooked but immensely important part of Britain’s musical identity and popular culture.

To give further context to the photographs, excerpts from interviews with those involved in the making of the records – be it the original singer, producer, photographer, designer or record label employee – are included as part of the display.

    Exhibition/book launch: 6–8pm, Wednesday 4 April

On Wednesday 9 May, at 8pm sharp, Dub Me Always presents the book launch for Alex Bartsch’s Covers: Retracing Reggae Record Sleeves in London, published by One Love Books, with the author, publisher Al Fingers and contributors Noel Hawks and Chris Lane of Fashion Records. Then, to the midnight hour, a night of original reggae vinyl with Fingers, Hawks and Lane on the decks, alongside host DJ David Katz.

    https://www.facebook.com/events/2114959965450520/

Chris Lane began writing on reggae in Blues & Soul in 1973, making his first trip to Jamaica that same year, spending his eighteenth birthday at the newly built Black Ark studio co-writing a song with Lee ’Scratch’ Perry and Bob Marley, as well as conducting trail-blazing interviews with Big Youth, Augustus Pablo, Keith Hudson, Dennis Brown, Bunny Lee and Coxsone Dodd. He contributed to Melody Maker, NME, Let It Rock, Music Week and Black Music, and in 1976 co-founded Dub Vendor with John MacGillivray. By 1978 he was involved in record production, most notably for photographer Dave Hendley’s Cruise label, and in 1980 Lane and MacGillivray launched Fashion Records. Known as the Dub Organizer because of the dub plates he cut at King Tubby’s studio and the Black Ark in the 70s, Chris is a renowned selector too.

Noel Hawks began working for Dub Vendor in 1979 and was naturally involved in Fashion Records too. In fact, he took the photographs for some of Fashion’s biggest picture sleeves, as noted in the Covers book. The author of Bunny Lee’s official biography and the book Complete Lyrics Of Bob Marley : Songs Of Freedom, as the scribe behind countless liner notes, Noel is also a keen selector.

Expect rare tunes galore and appealing floor-fillers, delivered with equal passion.

On Wednesday 10 October, Dub Me Always presents another sound system special, when Lloyd ‘Musclehead’ Francis of the legendary Saxon sound system joins host DJ David Katz for a night of original reggae vinyl and exclusive dub plates.

Formed in Lewisham in 1976, Saxon was the first British sound system to beat Jamaican sounds on their home turf and to feature at Reggae Sunsplash; they reigned supreme in the 80s, 90s, and beyond. Saxon have enjoyed a residency at Boisdale Canary Wharf in recent years and were featured at the Reggae Geel and Rototom Sunsplash festivals last summer. There is only one Musclehead...what will he pull out of the bag?

Expect hard-hitting floor fillers on the night, delivered with passion.
